Positive Psychology Association of Kenya Launched

Positive Psychology is a fast-developing approach within mainstream psychology. Since 1998, this approach has reoriented psychology to focus on wellbeing and happiness, in addition to its priority on dealing with psychological disorders.

This has led to a plethora of literature capturing empirical studies, conceptual works, and intervention methods.

Since 2014, Tangaza University College, in its inimitable style of being up-to-date, has introduced Positive Psychology as a core course for the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Counselling Psychology and as an elective for MA in Counselling Psychology. Following the enthusiasm of the students of the taught course, Tangaza has offered short workshops on positive psychology open to any participant.

Recently, Tangaza concluded a three-day workshop that attracted over 80 participants, which took place from 18-20 February 2020. The participants included lecturers and teaching staff of various universities in Kenya: USIU, Moi University, Pwani University, Laikipia University, and Kisii University.

The workshop ended with the launch of the Positive Psychology Association of Kenya (PPAK), which is a registered learned society. Prof. Sahaya G. Selvam (Chair), Dr Beatrice Churu (Secretary), Ms. Prina Patel (Treasurer), Dr Carolyne Chakua (Member), Mr Dominic Kamau (Member) have been the founding members of PPAK; they were also the facilitators of the workshop.

At the launching event, Prof. Vincent Ogutu - the Vice-Chancellor Designate of Strathmore University - delivered a key-note address on "Meaningful Work". He was also registered as the first honorary member of PPAK.
